The platform
What is Thelonious?
Thelonious is a horizon-scanning intelligence platform that monitors the fast-moving AI legal and policy landscape and connects the dots across it. It covers the areas that matter most across 145+ jurisdictions, around the clock, and turns what it finds into intelligence you can act on. The database behind it holds more than 6,700 verified records across cases, regulations, AI vendors, foundation models, services and licensing deals — including 4,000+ regulatory instruments.
The part that really matters is what happens next: a qualified legal professional reviews every entry before it reaches you.
AI finds it. A legal mind verifies it. You act on it with confidence.
How is this different from asking ChatGPT or Copilot?
A general-purpose model answers with the same confidence whether it is right or wrong, and it cannot tell you when it last looked at the source. That is a poor foundation for intelligence you need to rely on.
Thelonious differs in five specific ways:
- It monitors a defined, named set of primary sources continuously, rather than recalling whatever happened to be in a training set.
- Every entry is timestamped and linked to the originating document.
- A qualified legal professional signs off each entry before publication.
- Corrections are logged against the entry, not silently overwritten.
- Your dashboard is shaped around the jurisdictions and topics you follow, with alerts so you don’t miss what has changed.
What is Thelonious Research?
Thelonious Research is an AI research assistant, included with every paid seat, that helps you find what you need quickly. Ask it a question in plain English — “what changed in the EU AI Act’s GPAI obligations this quarter?” — and it answers from the Thelonious database, citing the verified records behind its answer.
It can also search the web. It is instructed to rely on our verified database for facts, and may draw on web sources to add context; you can also ask it to search the web directly. Web sources are listed separately from database records, under their own button, so you can always tell which is which. Material from the web has not been through our verification process, so check it against its source before relying on it.
Who is it built for?
Anyone who needs to stay on top of a fast-moving legal and policy landscape. AI now touches every part of a business, and Thelonious gives you what you need not to miss a change.
Our clients include in-house legal teams, AI governance and compliance leads, and law firms. In practice that means partners and associates advising on AI, technology and IP; knowledge and PSL teams keeping the firm current; and general counsel and compliance leads who have to answer to a board.
Human verification
What does “human-verified” actually mean?
Thelonious publishes nothing until a legal professional has verified it. For every entry, we:
- open the primary source and read it;
- confirm the status, the dates and the jurisdiction;
- check the summary has not over-reached, and correct it where it has;
- sign it off and publish it to the platform.
Your clients don’t accept “the AI said so.” Neither do we.
Can I rely on this for client advice?
Thelonious is a monitoring and research tool. It does not provide legal advice of any kind, and using it does not create a solicitor–client relationship with us. What it does is get you to the primary source faster, tell you what has moved and when, and give you a verified summary you can check in seconds. The judgement stays yours.
What happens if an entry is wrong?
Every entry carries a correction route. Flag it and it returns to the verification team the same working day. If the entry changes, everyone who has already seen it is notified, and the correction is logged against the entry rather than quietly overwritten — so the record of what you were told, and when, holds up.
Coverage and sources
Which jurisdictions do you cover?
145+ jurisdictions, including the EU and its member states, the UK, US federal and the active state legislatures, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Canada, Australia and Brazil — plus supranational bodies including the OECD, the Council of Europe and UN agencies. Coverage is reviewed regularly and expands as new regimes come into force.
Where does the source material come from?
We use primary sources wherever they exist: official gazettes, regulators and supervisory authorities, parliamentary and legislative trackers, court and tribunal listings, and agency guidance. Every entry links to the document it came from, so you can go straight to the original rather than take our word for the summary.
How quickly does something new appear?
Monitoring runs 24/7. Material developments are typically verified and published within one working day of the source publishing them. Significant items — a judgment, a regulator’s enforcement action, a statutory instrument laid before Parliament — are prioritised ahead of that queue.
Access, pricing and security
How is Thelonious priced?
Thelonious is licensed per seat, with a monthly fee for each seat. Every seat includes full access to the core platform: live monitoring across every jurisdiction we cover, your intelligence dashboard and alerts, and Thelonious Research at no additional cost.
We are also developing specialist modules that you will be able to add to your subscription for an additional fee. They are entirely optional — the core platform is complete without them.
Firm-wide and multi-seat arrangements are agreed directly. We will give you the figure on the demo call, in writing, with no obligation.
How is our data handled?
The Thelonious platform and its database are hosted in the United Kingdom, in London. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit, access is controlled per seat, and every sign-in is protected by a verification code sent to your email.
Thelonious Research is powered by Google’s Gemini models, accessed through Google Cloud. To answer a question, Research sends it to Google, which may process it in the United States or another country. We do not build or train our own AI model, and Google does not use your questions to train its models either.
Full detail is set out in the Thelonious Privacy Policy.
How long does it take to get started?
Same day. Thelonious runs in the browser — there is no installation, no IT project and nothing for your firm’s systems team to approve first. Once your licence is in place, seats are issued and you can be monitoring your jurisdictions that afternoon.
